Learning Art from Scratch: My Story of Growth, Culture, and Motivation

Motivation: The Key to Staying on Track

Staying motivated is a challenge we all face, right? Whether you’re chasing a dream or trying to learn something new—motivation isn’t always there when you need it. There are definitely days when I feel stuck or frustrate, when something doesn’t turn out the way I imagined. But here’s what I’ve learned: it’s okay to mess up. In fact, those mistakes are where you grow the most. Every “uh-oh” moment is just a stepping stone to getting better.

For example, there was a time I spent hours on a piece, only to realize the colors looked flat and lifeless. I was so annoyed! But instead of scrapping the whole thing, I took a step back, figured out what went wrong, and tried again. And guess what? The second try was way better. Motivation isn’t just about wanting to succeed—it’s about finding purpose in what you do.

For me, art is about telling stories and sharing experiences. It’s about connecting with people, especially through my culture. I’ve created two coloring books: one that’s all about friendship with cute designs for kids and teens, and another with more intricate designs celebrating the beauty of Black women. Knowing that my art can bring joy or inspire someone else keeps me motivated, even on the tough days.

Inspiring Others to Chase Their Dreams

If there’s one thing I want people to take away from my story, it’s this: go after what makes you happy. Don’t be afraid to follow your passion, even if it feels scary or uncertain. I didn’t know where my art journey would lead me when I first started, and I still don’t have it all figured out! But that’s the fun part, isn’t it? The journey is just as important as the destination.

And don’t worry about being perfect. We’re all beginners at something. When I first started drawing, I didn’t have the skill or experience I have now, but that didn’t stop me from trying. If I had waited until I felt “ready,” I’d probably still be waiting! The trick is to just start. Whether you love painting, writing, making music, or something totally different—go for it.

Also, it helps to laugh along the way. Sometimes, when a drawing isn’t going well, I just think, “Well, at least it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever drawn!” It takes the pressure off and reminds me that improvement comes with practice.

The Road Ahead

As I continue on my art journey, I’m excited about what’s next. I’m still learning, experimenting, and pushing myself to grow as an artist. And I’m just as motivated now as I was when I first started. Art has become a part of who I am, and it’s a joy to share that with others. It takes hard work, sure, but when you love what you do, it’s always worth it.

So, if you’ve got a dream, chase it. Don’t let fear, doubt, or setbacks hold you back. Life is too short not to follow the things that light you up inside. Who knows where it will take you? I didn’t think I’d end up here, but I’m so glad I did. Now, I get to inspire others to do the same, and that’s the best part.

Go out there, follow your passion, and see where the journey takes you!
